Change involves carrying out an activity against the habit of life.
F.M. Alexander (1869-1955)
What is it?
Our postural habits - the way we sit down, stand up, remain standing or sitting, lie down, pick something off the floor, drive a car, sit at a desk, write or type - are accumulated over our life times and they have become unconscious. The way we operate the machine that is ourselves in everyday activities frequently leads to aches and pains, or worse. Lessons in the Alexander Technique will give you an awareness of the way you use yourself and show
you how to prevent habits such as slouching and stiffening which are impairing the functioning of your systems. If we move with less effort and tension and create greater freedom in the joints, we allow the body to function better. When most people think of "good posture", they see a body held taut and upright. The body does not have to be tense to be upright, and the natural poise that we all had as young children can be rediscovered.
Above all it is a preventative technique. You will learn what not to do as opposed to what to do.
The Alexander Technique isn’t Osteopathy or chiropractic, but it does help with back pain. It isn’t massage, but it is calming and relaxing. It is one of the 50 things you should try before you die. To find out what it can do for you - book a lesson!
